A Walk in the Park Unschooling Group

let their imaginations lead them

Playgroup and Library Days

Every Thursday morning, a group of homescholers and non-homeschoolers meets at various parks or the public library for a fun time for the kids.  There is a story time; snack time;  art/craft time; and, of course, all-important play time!  For more information, please contact me at coramdeo_intheeyesofGod@yahoo.com

What Is Unschooling?

Unschooling is a form of homeschooling or home education in which the interests of the child or children direct the learning that takes place.  Unschooling has , thus, been referred to child-directed learning or delight-driven learning.  I, personally, lean toward the term "delight-driven."  Isn't it wonderful to watch a child play with a new toy, ride a bicycle, or paint a beautiful work of art?  When a child truly enjoys something in life, real learning is taking place.  I will never forget this past fall when my four-year old noticed a spider spinning an orb in our bushes.  He stared amazed at the intricacy of the spider's motion in creating its own special work of art.   From that moment on, he wanted to learn all he could about spiders.  This is an example of unschooling.  From that one "delight," my four-year old learned how spiders live, how they walk on the webs without getting trapped themselves, how they take care of their young, how to draw a spider (which taught him how a spider's body is designed), and even how to write and sound out the word spider....

The Mind of a Five-Year Old

My sons and I were doing their
Resurrection Eggs today.  Yes, I know it's past
Easter, but we usually end up continuing to do them
(per the boys' request) a week or so after Easter
before we put them away for the next year.  Today,
when we came to the praying hands, I asked my five-year old if
he would like to pray when we were finished.  Usually
when I ask that, he says no.  (He's pretty shy - for
lack of a better word.  He doesn't like to do things
in front of people).  Well, today, he said he did want
to pray.  Usually my prayers with the boys consist of
little rhymed prayers that are easy for them to
remember and memorize.  But I think my five-year old is now at
the age that he can understand praying is really about
talking to God.  So when we were finished, I prayed
and thanked God for the day were were having.  After
that, he prayed and, it was so cute, said, "Dear
Jesus.  Thank you for snow."  He was so serious, even
though it is spring.  He then said a few more things
under his breath that I couldn't hear, but at least
he's understanding we thank God for what we're
thankful for.  :^)

Just thought that was too cute not to share. :^)
