A Walk in the Park Unschooling Group

let their imaginations lead them

My Recent Letter to Our Local Newspaper

Thank you for including the article on virtual dissection in June 2's Salina Journal.  It is refreshing to hear that some schools are realizing students can learn just as much about anatomy through non-cruel methods as they can through traditional dissection.  I agree with the group mentioned in the article that dissection does encourage unnecessary cruelty.  The animals used for dissection are killed for nothing.  How many high schoolers are going to go on to use their dissection experience to help people?  Maybe the few that become doctors or scientists.  The rest are dissecting just because.  Dissecting is teaching these children that it is okay to kill something just because we want to.  I feel sorry for the science teacher mentioned who said there is nothing like cutting through tissue and feeling dead skin.  He sounds like he may have a few issues of his own that need to be dealt with.

As a homeschooling parent, I try to teach my sons to be kind to all creation.  When my sons are old enough for dissection, we will definitely use the virtual method.  I want to instill in them the value of life, in general.

Thank you for your time.  God bless.

Disturbing Trend in Parental Rights

Anyone who knows me knows I stand up for the rights of parents.  But I think this is taking parental rights to an extreme.  In the state of California, there is a law in process that would make spanking a child with an object illegal.  Many parents are saying it is against their parental rights to not be able to discipline their children by using an object - a folded newspaper, a rod, at paddle, whatever.  I do not think this particular law is taking away parental rights.  There are so many other ways to discipline children without causing them extreme physical pain!  I definitely hope this law passes!

What's Next

On July 15, we will be having a candy day!  We will all meet at 11:00 a.m. at Russell Stover's in Abilene, Kansas.  We will be shown a video and hear information about candy making, tour the candy store and shop if tha tis something we are interested in, and (if there is someone in the kitchen that day), we can watch them make the candy.  If interested, please contact me by e-mail at coramdeo_intheeyesofGod@yahoo.com.

Choices

What would you do if your five-year old son wanted to wear a pair of pink snowboots?  This is a question my husband and I had to answer recently.  When my sons picked out snowboots for the winter season, my three-year old chose Spider Man; but my five-year old had his heart set on pink Dora the Explorer boots.  What to do?  We could tell him no and make him feel like his decision was wrong, when, in reality, there was really nothing wrong with his choice other than what is sociably acceptable; or we could allow him to buy the pink boots and endure the looks of well-meaning friends, relatives, and strangers.  We chose the latter.  And my son is very happy with his decision.  What's more, there aren't too many looks.  :^)
